| Guilty reading |

I've been over indulging in my tendency to read many things at once. The kindle makes this too easy. I'm stalled at the beginning of Underworld while having read any number of dark urban fantasies. trash fantasy, when someone asks what I'm reading. I'm too embarrassed to admit titles.
I'd like a kindle feature for these never ending fantasies: a series dekrufter. I hate when authors have to revisit what has happened before in stories ad nauseam in case we've forgotten their character's motivation. I should be able to press a button to turn off the kruft unless I've forgotten. flip, look at the source code, flip, recompile the story.
Speaking of explaining a character's motivation, I apologize to anyone who has had to sit through that in any of my stuff. I'm sorry. I'll never do it again. These dark urban fantasies have way too much blah blah blah let me tell you what you should think blah blah blah until they get to the action. my eyes glaze over until I get to the dialog. or I trim down the blahblah in my head. They give me the same feeling I get when I want to rewrite some code just because it is annoying to read.
probably I need to work out the blahblahblah to figure out the characters, but not let it out into the real world. unless in very short form. |

Questions
1. Can I remap the keys on the Kindle? I would like to be able to remap the right side button so that it doesn't do anything. 2. Is there a way to type: & 3. When I start to fill up the drive does that increase the latency of page turning or is it my imagination? |

| Kindle OOPSLA Antiobjects PDF rendering |

I have a kindle, and this is how it renders one of my PDFs. The image doesn't look too bad on this one, but I did not have as much luck with my Pragmatic Progammer "Interface Oriented Design" book.

I've grown mellow over the years--becoming an opportunistic adapter rather than an early one. blah blah blah iphone blah blah blah. One day I just stopped caring about hardware details of gamer systems, new gadgets. I didn't really want a palm pilot (I'm old, and those were once new).
But I've been waiting and waiting for digital paper to reach the consumer market. Once I told myself that I wasn't going to bother with a digital assistant or book reader until the technology advanced enough for the device to live in the form factor of a handkerchief I could wad up into my pocket.
I lied. I got a Kindle. I still can't call myself an early adapter since I waited until the 2nd wave of Kindles, but I honestly don't think it is ready for opportunistic adapters. I don't care. I'm sick of waiting. and while I'm at it, where is my flying car?
Anyway, some observations. This could see the resurrection of newspaper subscriptions. or maybe it's just me. I pay a little to get the New York Times. Mid college I read the deadtree version but got sick of the physicality at some point and, hey, could get my news from the web... and eventually stopped reading as much as I had since reading on the screen, and in a fixed location, is annoying.
yay newspapers. yay magazines. yay lots of books and more room. boo the inevitable new habit of spending due my new crack dealer.
if you want more review details from me, too bad, I'm just blathering. You can find hordes reviewing it online already. |
